Liquefied petroleum gas powers kitchens, boilers and process heat across Yemen and the wider region. It is efficient, widely available and, handled properly, entirely routine. But when an LPG installation fails, it rarely fails quietly, and the investigation almost never finds a single careless act. It finds a decision made years earlier, on a drawing.
Risk is built in before the first valve opens
By the time an inspector walks a site, most of the risk profile is already fixed. Relief paths were sized for a smaller vessel than the one installed. Separation distances were set by the space available rather than by the standard. Materials were substituted during construction for whatever could be sourced that month. Tanks were sited close to a wall, a generator or an air intake because that was the convenient corner of the yard.
None of these are maintenance failures, and no amount of diligent inspection will correct them. They are design failures, and they can only be fixed by design.
What a competent LPG design controls
A properly engineered LPG system treats the whole installation as one pressure system with predictable failure modes. That means addressing:
- Vessel siting and separation — distances to boundaries, buildings, ignition sources and air intakes set by standard, not by convenience.
- Relief and venting — pressure relief sized for the actual vessel and duty, discharging to a safe location.
- Pipework and materials — correct specification, jointing and support, with no undocumented substitutions.
- Ventilation — LPG is heavier than air and collects at low level, so drainage, pits and enclosed spaces need deliberate attention.
- Isolation and emergency shutdown — accessible, clearly identified, and reachable during an incident rather than only in normal conditions.
- Ignition control — electrical equipment and hot work boundaries appropriate to the hazardous area.
Existing sites that were never commissioned to a standard
Many installations across the region were assembled incrementally, extended as demand grew, and never commissioned against any published standard. There is often no design file, no pressure test record and no as-built drawing. The operator inherits the system and, with it, the liability.
This is where an evaluation is worth more than an inspection.
